O apóstolo Paulo escreve em 1 Coríntios 10.6: “...e estas foram-nos feitas em figura...”. A palavra grega tupos, aqui traduzida por “figura”, tem o sentido de “padrão”, “ilustração”, “exemplo” ou “tipo”.
Em 1 Coríntios 10.11, Paulo observa: “Ora, tudo isto lhes sobreveio como figuras, e estão escritas para aviso nosso...”. O quê? Neste caso, Paulo se refere a eventos relacionados ao êxodo no Antigo Testamento. Assim, um tipo é um padrão bíblico, ou uma ilustração bíblica, normalmente extraído do Antigo Testamento, que assume a forma de padrões relacionados a pessoas, acontecimentos ou coisas.
Hebreus 8.5 nos diz que o Tabernáculo foi construído a partir de um padrão celestial que fora mostrado a Moisés no monte Sinai:
“Atenta, pois, que o faças conforme o Seu modelo, que te foi mostrado no monte” (Êx 25.40).
Estêvão observou em seu sermão:
“Estava entre nossos pais no deserto o tabernáculo do testemunho, como ordenara aquele que disse a Moisés que o fizesse segundo o modelo que tinha visto” (At 7.44).
O Tabernáculo e, mais tarde, o Templo são tipos que se tornam padrões que revelam elementos-chave do plano divino de salvação.

Certos acontecimentos na vida de José são um tipo e uma prefiguração do relacionamento entre Israel e seu Messias. José revela a seus irmãos um sonho que o apresenta como autoridade sobre eles (Gn 37.5-9). José é rejeitado por seus irmãos (Gn 37.10,11), que planejam matá-lo (Gn 37.18-20), mas acabam vendendo-o como escravo (Gn 37.25-27). Isso retrata a morte, o sepultamento e a ressurreição de Jesus Cristo. Enquanto isso, sem que Jacó, seu pai, nada soubesse, José subira a uma posição de grande poder e influência sobre as nações pagãs por causa dos acontecimentos ligados a uma grande fome (Gn 41). Há muitos tipos possíveis na Bíblia. No entanto, um evento ou conceito bíblico só pode ser estabelecido como um tipo depois que o texto foi interpretado historicamente e o padrão dos eventos determinado. Conotações tipológicas não podem ser usadas como a primeira abordagem interpretativa de qualquer passagem. A tipologia adequada só pode ser estabelecida após o fato, numa visão retrospectiva, comparando-se os padrões dos acontecimentos históricos ao plano divino para a história, passada e futura.
